Five ways RFID is Helping the Health Service

 

RFID Technology has been helping the NHS, ambulance services, care homes and suppliers to these vital organisations for many years. So how can RFID solutions help these busy organisations work smarter, quicker and more accurately in times of additional pressure? The key ways RFID technology can play its part in helping the challenge health providers are facing: 

  1. Monitoring Lone Care Workers

Lone care workers need to visit many homebound people during a working day.

RFID technology can help to accurately calculate attendance and travel times and so take some pressure of busy staff by automatically producing timesheets.

The patients have NFC RFID labels attached at the entry /exit point and the arrival and departure times are automatically logged.  The data is then transferred back to the organisation’s information systems enabling supervisors to see the location of each care worker.

  1. Helping Service Providers

RFID is used by healthcare suppliers including a firm which hires special beds to private individuals, care homes and hospitals. Each bed is equipped with an inflatable mattress, a mattress cover and a pump. Each item has an RFID tag which can be scanned when despatched, delivered (as proof of delivery), returned or serviced / cleaned.

RFID is also being used to track equipment to ensure it goes through the cleaning and maintenance processes after use.

  1. Ambulance Service

RFID technology, combined with bespoke application software, is being used to ensure each ambulance is equipped with all the emergency medical equipment the crews need for one England’s largest ambulance services.

  1. Tracking oxygen and nitrous oxide cylinders

Our solutions enable supervisory staff to quickly track and identify oxygen and nitrous oxide cylinders in use and those which need replenishment.

We’ve designed the system to calculate the number of cylinders required to meet demand over the following 48 hours, which enables planning of new deliveries.

  1. Moving critical staff

The Nightingale health centres such as the Excel Centre require staff to travel large distances in the course of their duties.

A British Bike Manufacturer has recognised the issue and is supplying bicycles for loan, free of charge, to the NHS  for use in Nightingale hospitals which are dealing with the outbreak.

RFID technology is used to ensure each bicycle is tagged to accurately track when bikes are despatched and returned after the hire period.
